WaPOR - Using Remote Sensing in support of solutions to reduce water productivity gaps

The WaPOR programme, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, assists the Member Countries of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in monitoring water productivity, identifying water productivity gaps, proposing solutions to reduce these gaps and contributing to a sustainable increase of agricultural production, while taking into account ecosystems and the equitable use of water resources, which eventually should lead to an overall reduction of water stress.

FAO is responsible for the implementation of the programme. The main partners for the implementation are IHE-Delft Institute for Water Education and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI).

Project components

1. Database (FAO/"FRAME" Consortium, led by eLEAF)

The database is publicly accessible, developed with open access data and open source algorithms. It will provide near real time information starting from 2009 to date.

2. Water and land productivity assessment (FAO/IHE-Delft)

On the basis of the database, the second component assesses agricultural land and water productivity, inherent productivity gaps and possibilities to close these gaps.

3. Water accounting (IHE-Delft/FAO)

Through this component, the project assesses, by means of water accounting, the consequences and sustainability of possible increases in water productivity in agriculture.

4. Capacity development and outreach to farmers (IWMI/IHE-Delft/FAO/Network)

This component strengthens capacities of stakeholders at different levels to increase water productivity in a sustainable way, building on collaborations with local partners and research institutions.
